TWG Tea Company 是 2006年成立於新加坡的茶公司。以製作”全世界最好的茶”為公司宗旨。董事長Manoj M.Murjani 是印度裔美國富豪,是Tommy Hilfiger的董事長, 總裁Taha Bouqdib 是從小浸淫於茶世界,在法國頂尖茶公司擔任最要職的茶鑑賞家法國人。這兩位愛茶、愛亞洲的男人,在上個世紀末期相識於巴黎,因茶而結為莫逆知己。遂有了創立製造”全世界最好的茶”的茶公司為構想。同時選擇茶的原鄉-亞洲,做為茶公司的基地。

TWG(The Wellness Group)號召了來自歐洲最頂尖老牌廠商的調茶師、品茶師、製茶師、品牌設計師以及米其林主廚,集古老歐洲製茶的經驗、技術,來到西化極深的獅城,讓對茶極度熱愛的歐洲與茶的原鄉-亞洲,擦出二十一世紀的火花,有了新的融合與生命。

TWG集合了對茶除了有最專業技術的專家外,更是為了從原料開始便要掌握品質,達到他們要求的完美。TWG將大吉嶺茶區的著名茶園買下,同時成立茶研究室。就在2008年底,該茶園被印度大吉嶺區評比為最好的茶園。可見TWG的創業宗旨是要製作”The Finest Tea of the World”,真正當之無愧。

Manoj 和Taha這兩位愛茶、也愛亞洲的男人,決定回到亞洲-茶的原鄉,打造亞洲品牌,選擇新加坡做為行銷全世界的基地。Taha說這是一件自然不過的事,因為新加坡離重要產區,如:大吉嶺,只要二小時即可到達,新鮮的茶葉不需長途跋涉到歐洲,即可進行製作最好的茶,同時新加坡西化深,自1837年即開始是各種香料、茶葉的出口口岸。TWG特地為 1837製作多款紀念茶,獻給亞洲的新加坡。

總裁Taha是TWG的靈魂人物,雖然歐洲甚至全球已有許多知名古老的茶廠,他就像一個武林高手,出山林無人出其右,他喜歡挑戰極限,他甚至說服老茶農為他種植指定的茶,更是贏得尊重。他認為將茶推向巔峰,是他畢生的夢想。TWG就是他實現夢想的舞台。

他以White House Tea (白宮茶),使用上等白茶培入法國南部最珍貴玫瑰,此款白茶,是向白宮新主人獻上最高的敬意。

New World Tea (新世界茶),美妙的滋味就像一個全新的世界在眼前展開。

Silver Moon Tea (銀月綠茶)則是用甜美的綠茶撫慰望著銀色月亮的芸芸眾生們。

Cultivated at altitudes of 3,000 to 7,325 feet, tea is currently grown in the regions of Jhapa, Illam, Panchthar and Dhankuta. All Nepali teas are organic, produced using biologically and ecologically balanced methods. Often compared to Indian Darjeeling teas, Nepali teas have a wonderfully complex flavour and character.

CEYLON 錫蘭

The island of Ceylon, otherwise known as Sri Lanka, is the world’s third largest tea producer.

In the plains and foothills, the tea plants flush every seven or eight days and are harvested all year round. The finest teas are gathered from late June to the end of August in eastern districts and from the beginning of February to mid-March in the western parts.

Ceylon’s most exquisite teas are harvested at an altitude of over 4,000 feet. The bushes grow more slowly in the cooler, mistier climate, and are more difficult to harvest due to the steep angle of the slopes on which they are grown. Ceylon teas are generally classified according to the altitude at which they are planted.

Located 55 miles east of the capital Colombo, this low altitude region produces teas that are generally used in blends, but can also be enjoyed pure with a little milk.

Located in the south, this region specializes in Flowery Orange Pekoes and Orange Pekoes with brilliant, regular-sized leaves that are carefully sorted.

As Manoj Murjani tells it, a summer evening stroll in Paris in 2004 took him to a new conception of tea and to a new luxury brand for the world.

A globetrotter by then living in Singapore, Murjani was attracted by the display at teahouse Mariage Frères, where Taha Bouqdib was in charge. The two men quickly bonded over their shared interest in the world’s most universal beverage. Thus was born the plan for TWG Tea, now a rising label.

"I think that was the first time I gave a business card in an Asian way—with two hands," says Murjani, 40, of Indian descent. "I looked him in the eyes and I said: ‘I’m really serious—if you really want to do something, I’d like to do something with you.’" The idea brewed for the next two years as the two crossed paths in London and Paris. "We were talking about something revolutionary in an industry that has existed but not really been done right," says Murjani. Singapore, close to the major tea capitals of Asia, was the chosen hub.

Bouqdib and his wife, Maranda Barnes, visited Singapore in early 2007 and loved it. In September of that year TWG Tea was born. Murjani, on strength of a $10 million investment, is chief executive. Bouqdib, also 40, is president, while his wife is the director of business development. And the business is developing. It is most prominent at home—it’s served in the front cabins of Singapore Airlines ( SGPJF.PK - news -people ) and at top hotels, and recently opened a second tea salon and boutique in the midst of the highest-end shops at the new ion Orchard mall.

Meantime, the Dean & Deluca food chain is carrying it to top U.S. markets, and Harrods just added TWG Tea to its tea emporium in London. A unit of LVMH, the biggest luxury outfit of all, is interested.

"The [LVMH] team came, [Chairman Bernard] Arnault came," Murjani says. "They all saw the magic of TWG Tea. We are also in discussions with a few other luxury groups and people who are in related industries—also pure investor groups. I would say in the next quarter we will make a decision."

Ravi Thakran, LVMH group president of South, Southeast Asia and Middle East, confirms that “we are having some discussions through our private equity arm, L Capital Asia.” The details of ongoing discussions are confidential, he says.

"I believe that TWG Tea has a great amount of intellectual property in this business to catapult into the big league," he adds. "At TWG you’re not just buying tea, you’re buying into the experience of the brand that promotes the lifestyle that is evocative of luxury."

Murjani and Bouqdib aim to make tea an affordable indulgence. “If you go to Louis Vuitton at Champs-Élysées you could have bespoke luggage for 18,000 euros or you could walk out with a 100-euro wallet or cardholder,” the chief executive says. Likewise at TWG Tea, where gourmet blends of loose tea leaves can cost from $4.50 to $4,500 for 50 grams. Its boxes of tea bags cost at least three times the price of Twinings or Lipton, leading store brands.

Says Bouqdib: “We work like a haute couture fashion designer; we choose our leaves carefully.” The company buys its teas from 36 countries, including out-of-the-way spots like Mozambique, Papua New Guinea and Burma. They go by names like Happy Tea, Magic Flute and Weekend in Moscow. At the Salon and Boutique cafes in Singapore they’re accompanied by fine chinaware and an 18kt gold teapot. Five more shops—in Tokyo, Kuwait, Dubai, New York and London—are to open in the next 18 months.

In its first full year TWG sold 650 tons of tea, bringing in $30 million, and has turned profitable this year, according to Murjani. “We’re comfortable to be growing at five- to tenfold a year,” he says, in both revenue and staff. Over the next year the company could invest up to $10 million in a tea academy and a museum in Singapore.

Tea has its other expensive, idiosyncratic labels, such as Mariage Frères and Le Palais des Thés. But never has it been as brashly marketed as this. “We can meld very well with luxury brands. Here we have Louis Vuitton, Cartier, Giorgio Armani, Harry Winston, Dior ( CHDRF.PK - news people )—and you have TWG Tea,” says Murjani, gesturing at the boutiques that surround his cafe at ion Orchard. “We can see us doing partnerships together … we are taking tea into fashion; every season we will have a collection.”

In his view TWG can even add some luster to the titans of luxe. “It’s becoming ubiquitous—you can find a Louis Vuitton, Dior or Cartier in every major city,” says Murjani. “How now to make it different? I think tea is an element, because champagne you can give, but only in the evenings … like at 5 p.m.

"With over 3,000 recipes, 800 already developed, we can pretty much pair a tea with all the brands here."

Murjani grew up thinking big. His family’s apparel empire, the Murjani Group, revolutionized women’s jeans with the Gloria Vanderbilt brand in 1979. “My grandfather taught me there were no boundaries—just what you believe in. And I saw this with Gloria Vanderbilt. At that time there were only jeans based on a man’s body—Levi’s and Wrangler.”

His late grandfather, B.K., and father, Mohan, brought out the first pair of jeans sculpted for women. Mohan’s circle of friends included Andy Warhol and Malcolm Forbes (Manoj remembers a River Thames excursion on the Forbes’ Highlander yacht, where at age 15 he played “Chopsticks” with Andrew Lloyd Webber.) And there was also Vanderbilt herself.

"My dad said to Marvin Traub [then chairman of Bloomingdale’s]: ‘I will just pass you 100 pairs of jeans and run an ad and see what happens.’ And he said: ‘Sure.’ The next day it was sold out," recounts Murjani, snapping his fingers. "That was when Gloria Vanderbilt was born. With TWG Tea it’s the same. We didn’t create tea—tea has long existed for centuries. But it’s the way in which we’re doing tea."

Murjani was born in Hong Kong, schooled in England and got his Bachelor of Science degree in business at Wharton, spending summers at the family offices in New York. A stint in banking was interrupted by a call to restructure his clan’s business, which had run into trouble in the 1990s. By 2002, after building up the foundations of the family business in India, he decided to move on. His brother Vijay now heads up the company from India, where Murjani has never lived on a long-term basis.

"At first, of course, [my father] was not happy," he recalls. "I had the blessings of my grandfather to do something different and to pursue what I was passionate about." He started The Wellness Group (hence the TWG name), which invested in spas, wellness-related products and high-end tea.

But it wasn’t until Murjani met Bouqdib that an enterprise as ambitious as TWG Tea was possible. Maranda Barnes likens their partnership to fashion’s Dolce & Gabbana: “You can’t have one without the other.” Bouqdib, who is French of Moroccan descent, has worked in tea since he was 23. Traveling between Europe and Asia, he learned the craft of blending, and more important, fostered strong relationships with tea gardens and estates worldwide, sometimes visiting twice a year.

In the Wuyi mountains, a Unesco World Heritage site in China’s Fujian Province, are gardens known for a famous tea called Da Hong Pao. The leaves here are highly sought after and are largely reserved for the government. “It’s not easy to get it. We don’t have tons, we have very small quantities—but we have it,” Bouqdib says. “Last year we had half a kilogram (of Da Hong Pao Prestige), this year we have 3.”

The onset of TWG, he goes on, has added a dimension to his tea-garden visits. “Before, I spoke to the father, the owner of the gardens. Today we meet the new generation—they, too, want to do something different.” Bouqdib continues to look after the various plantations the way a negotiant might monitor his contract vineyards.

In the Darjeeling Himalayan foothills is Okayti Tea Estate, another of TWG Tea’s suppliers. Antriksh Kumbat, the owner, who has known Bouqdib since the early 1990s, says the Singapore company is fast becoming one of his biggest buyers. In 2008 TWG Tea bought close to 10 tons of tea. “They’re still new, but in two to three years I won’t be surprised if they become my biggest customer,” he says, noting that his biggest client today, Harrods, buys about 40 tons out of the 130 tons of tea he produces. “We’re giving [TWG] the finest tea … Taha is very choosy in what he wants to buy.”

Both Murjani and Bouqdib are used to flying out of Singapore to meet clients and suppliers on a day’s (or less) notice. “There is no question in my mind that the team at TWG Tea will change the tea business,” says Dean & Deluca Chief Executive Mark Daley in New York. “They will not compromise on the quality of the products they produce and understand how to connect with customers.” The brand is selling “exceptionally well,” he adds, and has just rolled out a D&D custom label as well.

Euromonitor International researcher Richard Haffner, based in Chicago, adds that TWG Tea has a solid product mix, which includes fruit and floral notes. “Globally, TWG is well positioned to take advantage of the positive health associations of fruit and herbal teas,” he says. Today 1.8 million tons of tea are consumed as hot beverages in a year, and Euromonitor expects that to grow steadily.

In the U.S. alone total sales of tea reached $6.85 billion in 2007, latest available data show, up by almost four times from 1990. Joseph P. Simrany, president of the Tea Association of the USA, says this is explained in part by a “tremendous upsurge in interest” in specialty teas “on the part of operators, hoteliers, entrepreneurs and consumers.” He adds that specialty tea, which saw sales of $1.1 billion in the U.S. for 2007, could double its volume over the next five years. But to Murjani and Bouqdib, other teas, even those also served in little cloth bags, aren’t in TWG’s category, which is luxury. It is selling not only the precious tea accessories but also tea-based desserts and pastries like macaroons, jelly and truffles.

In the “forbidden room” at the Singapore headquarters, however, the pair leave the world behind to do their blending. Few others get to see the dimly lit space where Murjani and Bouqdib create more than two dozen or so flavors a year. Canisters of blends line the walls. “This feels like you’re no longer in the office—you feel immediately like you’ve stepped into another world,” says Bouqdib. “Here you’ll feel alone with tea.”

Adds Murjani: “We sit here at odd hours. It can be 6 a.m., 8 p.m. or 1 a.m. Or 4 p.m. It’s almost like time doesn’t exist here.” Blends slated for a 2012 release can be found. The future of tea, the two like to think, literally resides in this space.

Remembering the first evening in Paris, Murjani asks with a laugh, “Did we choose tea or did tea choose us? I really believe there’s no coincidence that Taha and I are together—doing TWG Tea and creating a revolution.”
